Child Car Seat Checks
The proper installation and use of child safety seats and booster seats protects a child’s life if the vehicle they are traveling in is in a crash.
The BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation supports child car seat checks around the province where certified child passenger safety educators spend approximately 20-minutes in a one on one session with parents answering questions and showing them the proper installation and use pertaining to their child’s car seat stage.
In B.C. all drivers are responsible for transporting all children in secure age and weight-appropriate child car seats until their 9th birthday or 4’ 9” in height.

HYPER PARENTS & CODDLED KIDS
Thurs. Feb. 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBC-TV’s Doc Zone
Friday February 5 at 10 pm ET/PT on CBC News Network
Parents have always wanted the best for their children, but in recent years, some have taken it to new extremes. Raising kids has become more product development than child development. And as these children enter adulthood, many are finding themselves unprepared for the real world. Is all of this attention giving the next generation a competitive edge or creating new problems that will last a lifetime?
Premiering Thurs. Feb. 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBC-TV’s Doc Zone, Hyper Parents & Coddled Kids sheds light on this question while exploring the cultural pressures that make hyper parenting almost impossible to resist. The one-hour documentary examines the intensely competitive hyper parenting phenomenon – and its effects on kids today. From exposing babies in the womb to prenatal education systems and enrolling them in gymnastics before they can walk to negotiating their grown kids’ job contracts and salaries, parents today work hard to make sure their children stay ahead of the pack. But as these kids reach adulthood, will it be to their advantage or will it backfire?
"There are indications that the unprecedented amount of attention parents are giving their children may not have the outcome they had hoped for. In fact, in some cases, it may have the opposite effect," says Maria LeRose, co-director and producer.
Several experts weigh in on the issue including Canadian-raised journalist Carl Honoré, author of Under Pressure: Rescuing Childhood from the Culture of Hyper-Parenting; clinical psychologist Madeline Levine who works with many privileged kids who suffer anxiety and depression as a result of hyper parenting; and Ron Alsop, former Wall Street Journal editor and reporter, and author of The Trophy Kids Grow Up: How the Millennial Generation is Shaking Up the Workplace.
Hyper Parents & Coddled Kids will be rebroadcast: Friday February 5 at 10 pm ET/PT on CBC News Network

BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund’s 14th Annual Burn Awareness Week
Available online at www.burnfund.org, BAW teaches kids to be responsible for their own safety, and helps make their families aware of potentially harmful situations.
A majority of Canadian parents aren’t aware of the scald and burn hazards in their homes. A survey by Safe Kids Canada found that 70 per cent of Canadian parents did not know that the most common cause of burn injuries to children is scalds from hot liquids, such as spilled hot drinks and hot tap water, rather than fire.
“Most adults realize that children need to be kept safe from fire or hot objects like the stove, but they do not realize that hot liquids are just as dangerous,” says Tim Baillie, Burn Fund Director and Chair of the Burn Awareness Week Program. “Hot liquids burn just like fire.”
Each year an estimated 9,000 children in Canada visit hospital emergency room for burns, and almost half of these have suffered scalds from hot liquids. Close to 1,000 Canadian children are hospitalized each year for severe scalds and burns. Approximately 50 per cent of these children are hospitalized for scalds alone. (Source: Safe Kids Canada)
In British Columbia, more than 200 children are hospitalized for scald burns and thousands more are treated in emergency departments. Data collected over a five-year period in BC showed 453 children (birth to five years) hospitalized because of burns from hot liquids. During the same time frame, Children’s treated 343 young children for scald burns — 87 per cent of these injuries occurred at home, with an average of 40 per cent occurring in the kitchen and 9.3 per cent in the bathroom. (Source: BC Children’s Hospital)
Scalds from hot tap water are often the most severe. Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive. A child’s skin burns four times more quickly and more deeply than an adult’s skin at the same temperature. Most home hot water heaters in Canada are set at 60° Celsius (140° Fahrenheit). At this temperature, a child’s skin can burn in just one second.
The Burn Fund urges parents to study this important burn and scald safety information and to spend some time with their children to review the online Burn Awareness Program.
