The Cultural Olympiad’s LunarFest Lanterns at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts
For the second year in a row, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is pleased to feature an installation of lanterns as part of the 2nd Annual LunarFest. From February 22–March 21, 2010 the Shadbolt Centre will be home to approximately 400 lanterns decorated by students from Canada andTaiwan. Brought to the Centre by the Cultural Olympiad and the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, the installation is an extension of The Lantern Forest: Return to Innocence project featured downtown on Granville Street.

The Lantern Forest, a glowing constellation of 2010 lanterns has been a visible backdrop to many TV segments during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The installation including 40 steel trees with thousands of lanterns decorated by school children of the world have been illuminating the 700 block of Granville Street between Georgia and Robson streets nightly since before the start of the games. Co-presented by the Cultural Olympiad and the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, the lanterns welcomed the arrival of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and ushered in a new Lunar New Year tradition in Vancouver.

Made up of art works chosen from thousands of submissions, the Lantern Forest, reflecting children’s unique cultural heritage and pledges for a greener earth, has showcased the creativity and wishes for the world by these youngsters.

While the downtown installation will close on February 28th, the Shadbolt Centre installation, a selection of the most ingenious designs from the LanternForest, will illuminate the East Plaza nightly until March 21.

RCMP SCHOONER ST. ROCH: WORKHORSE OF THE NORTH
With RCMP Staff Sergeant Dan Lemieux

Retired RCMP Staff Sergeant Dan Lemieux will tell the story of the RCMP Schooner St. Roch built at Burrard Shipyards at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue in 1928. The schooner supplied RCMP Detachments in the Arctic during the summer months until 1954. When frozen in the ice during nine months of winter, it became a working detachment.

You will learn about survival in the North and how helpful the Inuit were as guides. They assisted police officers enabling them to make month long patrols to enforce laws, take census, settle disputes, render first aid, search for missing hunters, and carry out general duties. The St. Roch was especially built for Northern Service. Learn how it survived the winters when other ships were crushed. This presentation will also discuss global warming, the plight of the polar bear and the sovereignty issue of who owns the Arctic.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 10, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
WHERE: Lynn Valley Main Library Community Meeting Room, 1277 Lynn Valley Road, North Vancouver

Rick Scott’s family concert is sure to get everyone jumpin’ out of their seats!
Rick Evergreen Cultural Centre presents award winning singer, songwriter and children’s entertainer Rick Scott on Sunday, March 14 at 2pm. Scott, who combines music and laughter in lively, participatory concerts for all ages, is Canada’s leading proponent of the Appalachian mountain dulcimer. And what is a dulcimer? Well, kids around the world call it ‚The Electric Snowshoe.’ But according to Rick it’s a wooden 4-string instrument that originates from Northeast USA, Kentucky, Tennessee, N. Carolina. He is self taught and plays it upside down and backwards from the traditional technique!

If you’ve never heard one played before, this is the perfect opportunity! Rick Scott is a seasoned musician with over 35 years of music-making experience, with 17 albums to his name, including six children’s CDs and a humungous list of awards that are too many to list.

Tickets to see Rick Scott are $15 and $12 for children 12 and under. A family of four is $45 and Groups of 8 or more get 15% off. Call the Box Office 604.927.6555 or buy online. Show time is 2pm. Evergreen Cultural Centre is located at 1205 Pinetree Way in Coquitlam. Come by and have some fun!!
